Austin will tell you it's not like the rest of Texas, and then a hundred thousand people will put on the exact same shade of burnt orange and walk to the same stadium, and you'll understand that some things transcend even Austin's need to be different. Game day here is live music, breakfast tacos at nine, and a skyline that glows orange after wins.
The Mascot
Bevo is a live Texas longhorn steer with a horn span wider than your car, and he has attended games since 1916 — making him one of the oldest live mascot traditions anywhere. Handlers in cowboy hats keep him calm on the sideline, mostly. Ask Georgia's bulldog about the 2019 Sugar Bowl sometime. The Hook 'em Horns hand sign came later, invented at a 1955 pep rally, and is now the universal greeting of the entire city.
The Saturday
Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium seats over 100,000 and sits ten minutes from downtown, which means game day and Austin's regular Saturday chaos merge into one organism. The tower glows burnt orange after victories, 'The Eyes of Texas' plays with a hundred thousand hands in the air, and then everyone argues about barbecue.
What to Wear
This is where our golfer line started: the vintage longhorn, mid-swing, embroidered on a rope cap — because Austin is the rare town where the tailgate and the tee time are the same demographic. Tees and hats, burnt orange and white, original art drawn by hand. Start with the Austin Quarterback Tee, the golfer rope hat and all Austin gear.
