Game Day in Clemson: A Field Guide

Clemson is what happens when a town of seventeen thousand decides to host eighty thousand people a dozen times a year and gets extremely good at it. Everything orange within a fifty-mile radius funnels into the little lakeside town by mid-morning, and the RVs start arriving on Thursday.

The Mascot

The Tiger has prowled Clemson sidelines for over a century, and his signature act is doing pushups after every score — one for each Clemson point on the board, which in a blowout becomes a legitimate athletic event of its own. Somewhere north of 300 pushups have been logged in a single game. The suit is not air-conditioned. Respect the Tiger.

The Saturday

Before every home game, the team touches Howard's Rock — a chunk of white flint from Death Valley, California, given to coach Frank Howard — and then runs down the hill into Memorial Stadium while 80,000 people lose their minds. It's been called the most exciting 25 seconds in college football, and the nickname stuck because it's simply true. Also: Clemson fans famously stamp tiger paws on $2 bills and spend them in road-game towns to prove their economic impact. They've been doing it since 1977.

What to Wear

Our vintage Clemson line is a hand-drawn tiger in orange and regalia purple on garment-dyed tees and embroidered rope caps — the heritage look for a program that's mostly heritage and hill. Start with the Clemson Quarterback Tee, the golfer rope hat and all Clemson gear.
