Game Day in Columbus: A Field Guide

Vintage Columbus Buckeyes mascot illustration

Columbus is the biggest city in America that fully stops for college football. Two million people, and on a fall Saturday the entire metro reorganizes itself around a horseshoe-shaped stadium on the Olentangy. Strangers yell 'O-H' at each other across intersections and are answered 'I-O' one hundred percent of the time. It is not optional.

The Mascot

A buckeye is a poisonous nut, and Ohio State fans consider this the most intimidating possible mascot, a bit they have committed to since the 1950s. Brutus Buckeye — a person with an enormous nut for a head — arrived in 1965. Fans wear necklaces of real buckeyes strung like beads, and players earn buckeye stickers for their helmets, which is why the good ones end the season looking like they lost a fight with a scrapbook.

The Saturday

The Best Damn Band in the Land performs Script Ohio before the game, an unbroken cursive 'Ohio' looped by 225 marching musicians, capped by a senior sousaphone player strutting out to dot the i — the single highest honor Ohio State confers, including honorary doctorates. The Horseshoe holds 100,000+, and when Michigan week arrives, every letter M on campus gets taped over.

What to Wear

Our vintage Columbus line is hand-drawn buckeye art in scarlet and gray on garment-dyed tees and embroidered caps. Old-school, pre-corporate Big Ten energy — the look your dad's game photos have. Start with the Columbus Quarterback Tee, the golfer rope hat and all Columbus gear.
