Game Day in Eugene: A Field Guide

Vintage Eugene Ducks mascot illustration

Eugene game day starts with a walk: fans cross the Willamette River on footbridges through the trees, thousands of people in green and yellow filtering through a forest to a stadium that holds 54,000 and sounds like it holds 154,000. Autzen Stadium's noise-to-size ratio is the stuff of visiting-quarterback nightmares.

The Mascot

The Duck is, by formal agreement, a specific duck: a 1947 handshake deal between the athletic director and Walt Disney himself let Oregon model its mascot on Donald, and decades of lawyers have since formalized what a handshake started. The result is the only mascot in sports with a Hollywood pedigree and a motorcycle. His pushup count after scores made him famous; his personality made him beloved.

The Saturday

'If it ain't raining, it ain't training' is a Eugene philosophy, and the crowd shows up in weather that would cancel lesser programs' tailgates. Autzen's low roofline traps sound and throws it back on the field. Between the uniforms — a different combination nearly every week, thanks to the Nike umbilical — and the neon-green third downs, Oregon turned game day into a design event.

What to Wear

Our vintage Eugene line goes the other way from the chrome-helmet era: hand-drawn duck art, classic green and yellow, garment-dyed tees and caps that look like the 1994 Rose Bowl season rather than a uniform reveal. Start with all Eugene gear.
