Game Day in Fort Worth: A Field Guide

Vintage Fort Worth Horned Frogs mascot illustration

Fort Worth is the big city that still moves like a cow town, and TCU game day fits it perfectly: close-in, neighborly, and dressed head to toe in a purple that has no business working as well as it does. The campus sits in a leafy neighborhood a few miles from downtown, and on Saturdays the whole area turns into one long front-yard party.

The Mascot

The horned frog is not a frog — it's a horned lizard, a spiky little Texas native that shoots blood from its eyes when threatened, which is objectively the most metal defense mechanism of any mascot animal in America. TCU has worn the name since the 1890s, and SuperFrog, the costumed version, leans fully into the menace.

The Saturday

The Riff Ram chant — 'Riff, Ram, Bah, Zoo' — dates to the 1920s and is proudly nonsensical; it exists because it's fun to yell, which is the correct reason. Amon G. Carter Stadium got a full rebuild into one of the nicest mid-size venues in the country, and when the Frogs made their College Football Playoff run, Fort Worth painted itself purple for two months straight.
