Knoxville is the only town in America where a meaningful percentage of the crowd arrives by boat. The Vol Navy — hundreds of vessels rafted together on the Tennessee River — ties up steps from Neyland Stadium, and by Saturday morning the river smells like bacon and sounds like Rocky Top, which will be played approximately one hundred more times before sundown. You will not get it out of your head. Nobody ever has.
The Mascot
Smokey is a bluetick coonhound — a Tennessee native breed — chosen at a 1953 halftime contest where each candidate hound was introduced and the crowd picked by applause. The story goes that Smokey heard his name, howled, the crowd roared, and he howled louder. He's been leading the team through the T ever since, and the current Smokey still bays at the crowd like he's running for office.
The Saturday
Neyland Stadium holds over 100,000 on the riverbank, the end zones are painted in orange-and-white checkerboards, and the team runs through a giant T formed by the Pride of the Southland Band — a tradition so beloved that coaches get judged on protecting it. Deep orange everywhere, 'Fourth and one, give him five' energy, and Rocky Top after every score, which on a good day is a lot of Rocky Top.
