Game Day in Lawrence: A Field Guide

Vintage Lawrence Jayhawks mascot illustration

Lawrence sits on a hill above the Kansas River, prettier than the state's flatland reputation suggests, and its game day has a particular charm: this is a basketball cathedral town that treats football Saturdays like a festival precisely because the stakes have historically been merciful. When the football is actually good — and lately it has been — Lawrence becomes one of the best surprises in the sport.

The Mascot

The Jayhawk doesn't exist. It's a mythical bird born from Kansas's violent 1850s history, when free-state guerrillas were called Jayhawkers, and the university made the myth a mascot — a smiling blue bird in red boots that has no biological explanation and needs none. 'Rock Chalk, Jayhawk' derives from a chalk-rock limestone chant invented by a science club in the 1880s, and delivered slow and low in unison it's one of the eeriest, greatest sounds in college sports.

The Saturday

After big moments, the crowd 'waves the wheat' — arms up, swaying side to side like a Kansas field in wind, which is exactly what it looks like from across the stadium. The stadium on the hill has been rebuilt into David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium's new incarnation, and the campanile tower rings above it. Then everyone walks down Massachusetts Street, one of the best main streets in the Midwest, and toasts either outcome.

What to Wear

Our vintage Lawrence line is hand-drawn jayhawk art in crimson and blue on tees and caps — a mythical bird deserves mythology-era design, not a modern vector gloss. Start with all Lawrence gear.
