Lexington is horse country first, basketball country second, and football country on a rolling twelve-Saturday lease — but don't let the ordering fool you. Big Blue Nation shows up for everything, the tailgates are bourbon-forward in a way the rest of the SEC quietly envies, and a fall Saturday framed by white-fenced horse farms on the drive in is hard to beat.
The Mascot
The Wildcat name dates to 1909, when an official declared the team had 'fought like wildcats' at Illinois, and Kentucky kept it. The costumed Wildcat handles sidelines; Scratch works the kids; and for decades a live bobcat or mountain lion made appearances — modern sensibilities retired that practice, but the fight in the name stayed.
The Saturday
Kroger Field game days run on Kentucky hospitality: country ham, burgoo if you're lucky, and a pour of something local from a tailgate bar that would pass inspection at a wedding. The C-A-T-S chant rolls around the stadium all afternoon. And whatever the score, the conversation drifts to basketball by the fourth quarter, because Lexington contains multitudes but also priorities.
What to Wear
Our vintage Lexington line is hand-drawn wildcat art in royal blue on garment-dyed tees and embroidered caps — the old-Kentucky look that goes with a barn jacket and a julep cup. Start with all Lexington gear.
