Game Day in Lincoln: A Field Guide

Vintage Lincoln Cornhuskers mascot illustration

On home Saturdays, Memorial Stadium becomes the third-largest city in Nebraska — bigger than everything in the state except Omaha and Lincoln itself. Every seat has been sold for every home game since 1962, the longest sellout streak in the sport, through national titles and through seasons Nebraskans prefer not to discuss. The streak is the point: this is the most loyal fan base in college football, and it isn't especially close.

The Mascot

Herbie Husker is a grinning overall-clad farmer with a football-sized fist, born from a 1974 illustration, and Lil' Red — an inflatable bouncing kid — joined later for the younger crowd. But Nebraska's real mascot might be the crowd itself: the Sea of Red is so uniform that visiting teams describe the stadium as a single organism.

The Saturday

Nebraska fans are famous for applauding opposing teams as they leave the field after hard-fought games — a sportsmanship tradition that sounds made up until you see 90,000 people do it. The Tunnel Walk entrance, set to 'Sirius,' turns the pregame into a launch sequence. Runzas at the concession stand, balloons after the first score in the old days, and corn genuinely everywhere: the stereotype is accurate and Lincoln is proud of it.
