Game Day in Norman: A Field Guide

Vintage Norman Sooners mascot illustration

Norman on a football Saturday is a study in crimson commitment: the color starts at the stadium and radiates out until the whole town is wearing it, and the fight song — 'Boomer Sooner,' borrowed shamelessly from Yale's 'Boola Boola' — plays so many times that visitors report hearing it in their sleep for days afterward.

The Mascot

The Sooner Schooner is a scaled-down Conestoga wagon pulled at a gallop by two white ponies named Boomer and Sooner, and it charges the field after every Oklahoma score — a tradition since 1964. The name reaches back to the 1889 Land Run, when settlers who jumped the gun were called 'Sooners.' Oklahoma made the rule-breakers the heroes, which tells you something about the state's sense of humor.

The Saturday

Owen Field — officially Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium — has hosted more winning than nearly any patch of grass in the sport; Oklahoma once won 47 straight games, a record nobody has approached since. The walk down Lindsey Street, the Pride of Oklahoma's pregame, and the Schooner's wheel-tilting turns at full speed are the holy trinity of a Norman Saturday.

What to Wear

Our vintage Norman line is hand-drawn sooner art in crimson and cream on garment-dyed tees and embroidered rope caps — land-run energy, drawn by hand like it's 1955. Start with the Norman Quarterback Tee, the golfer rope hat and all Norman gear.
