Game Day in Oxford: A Field Guide

Vintage Oxford Rebels mascot illustration

Oxford doesn't tailgate; Oxford hosts. The Grove — ten oak-shaded acres in the middle of campus — fills with thousands of tents featuring chandeliers, floral arrangements, silver serving trays, and generations of families in their Sunday best on a Saturday. It is routinely and correctly called the best tailgate in America, and the game is almost an intermission.

The Mascot

Ask 'Are you ready?' anywhere in Oxford and you'll get the full Hotty Toddy back — a chant whose words ('Hotty Toddy, Gosh almighty, who the hell are we?') mean nothing and everything. The Rebels' on-field mascot has evolved over the years to today's Landshark, born from a defensive celebration by the late Tony Fein, fins-up.

The Saturday

Two hours before kickoff the team makes the Walk of Champions through the Grove, a slow procession through a crowd that closes in like water, and then Vaught-Hemingway Stadium picks up where the tents leave off. Dresses and blazers persist into the stands. Win or lose, the Square — Oxford's courthouse-anchored downtown, all bookstores and balconies — takes the crowd deep into the night.

What to Wear

Our vintage Oxford line is hand-drawn art in navy and red on garment-dyed tees and caps — because even the Grove allows a great t-shirt, provided it looks this good with a blazer. Start with the Oxford Quarterback Tee, the golfer rope hat and all Oxford gear.
